Always Remember - You Are Special!

All human beings are precious in the sight of God. We were created that way. Our true value and identity do not come from physical attributes but rather from the spiritual bond we share with the Creator. That explains God's love for us and the sacrifice He was willing to make to preserve fellowship with humanity.

Humans share a unique, spiritual bond with the Creator.

Humankind is unique among all living creatures, for we alone were created in the image and likeness of God (Gen. 1:26-27). This is truly an amazing thing when you consider that God is the eternal, omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient, spirit being who willed the entire universe into existence. How can we possibly be like God? That distinction was made during the creation of the first humans when Adam and Eve were given an eternal spirit. First Corinthians 2:11 acknowledges the dual nature of humankind - possessing both a physical body and a spirit. “For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God.” We alone possess a piece of God inside us. While it is true that our physical body will one day return to the dust of the ground in death (Gen. 3:19), our spirit is eternal and will go back to God (Eccl. 12:7). Having a common spiritual tie with the Creator provides the basis for an eternal relationship. Ultimately, this explains God's deep love for humanity as well as the sacrifice He was willing to make to preserve fellowship with us.

God endowed humankind with extraordinary capabilities and responsibilities.

The consequences of possessing a spirit seem profound even in the physical realm. The first chapter of Genesis makes it clear that humans are the pinnacle of God’s creation. The earth and all things in it were prepared as the environment and dwelling place for humanity. Moreover, by God’s command and authority (Gen. 1:26, 28), the first couple (Adam and Eve) were directed to:
  • populate the earth
  • subdue it
  • rule over all other living creatures
To fulfill their responsibilities, God granted humankind other God-like characteristics including:
  • intelligence: ability to think, plan, reason, make judgments
  • free will - the freedom to make choices for themselves
  • appreciation for abstract concepts such as beauty, love, responsibility
  • emotions: feelings like caring, joy, happiness, remorse
This equipped humans to lead a productive life caring for themselves and others using the earthly resources God provided.

Having a spirit makes you special in God's sight.

Possessing an eternal spirit and being given dominion over all the earth, God elevated humanity to an extraordinary position in His creation. Our value does not arise from the attributes and capabilities of our physical body. The color of our skin, our height, and attractiveness are different from one to another, but all humans are really spirits temporarily housed in a physical body of flesh and blood. As such, our true nature and identity reside not in what we are presently but in what endures beyond the grave. It is important to draw comfort from that fact. When the days are tough, when things are not going well, when you are feeling really beat up and trodden under foot by this world, no matter what anyone else may tell you or say about you, no matter how you may feel about yourself and your life, you must always remember that you share a special relationship with the eternal Creator of this universe. You are never forgotten! God knows you so well as to have numbered the very hairs on your head (Matt. 10:30).

Above all else, always remember God wants you to know:

You Are Special!

No one can ever take that away from you. Furthermore, that makes you so important that the Son of God was willing to die for you. Why so? How can it be? These questions are answered in "The Message and Mission of Jesus" podcast.
